Welcome
Hunley Park Elementary School, established in 1959 and represented by its mascot Alpha the Buzzy Bee, is dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging within its community through the Ron Clark house system. The school's core mission is to ensure that every student acquires the world-class skills required of a South Carolina graduate. The passionate teaching staff implements a rigorous curriculum emphasizing critical thinking, collaboration, student engagement, and literacy development. The school values social-emotional learning and provides a nurturing environment for all students.
In pursuing literacy, students engage with academic texts that resonate with their experiences, sparking meaningful conversations. Collaboration is encouraged in classrooms, with teachers employing discussion protocols to facilitate lively debates and idea exchanges among students. A focus on enhancing numeracy skills is evident through visual models, problem-solving strategies, peer discussions, and the justification of answers. These practices promote critical thinking and active participation, enabling students to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations.
Field trips play a vital role in the curriculum, offering students opportunities to expand their knowledge and gain hands-on experience. For instance, we visited the aquarium to explore sea life, the Barrier Islands to learn about scientific inquiry skills, the Gilliard to observe performances celebrating the arts, and career days to explore various professions. Additionally, our students have access to a well-rounded curriculum that includes art, physical education, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), computer, music, and competitive sports such as soccer, football, basketball, step-team, and cheerleading.
Beyond academics and extracurricular activities, we focus on maintaining a safe learning environment that promotes positive behaviors for all our scholars. We are proud to implement the Ron Clark House System, where every scholar belongs to one of four houses: Isbindi, Altruismo, Amistad, and Rêveur. Our students wear their house shirts, sing their house chants loudly, and proudly display their house symbols. Our house system includes lessons that instruct students on our academic, behavioral, and safety expectations. We rely on lessons from Second Step to foster social and emotional skills. We celebrate students demonstrating these behaviors by awarding them house points and holding house celebrations.
Hunley Park is dedicated to cultivating a supportive school community that addresses students' social, emotional, and academic needs. The entire staff is committed to preparing students to excel in their community, thrive globally, and succeed in their future endeavors. The hallways exude a sense of unity and warmth, where every student is embraced and valued.
